Whether you realize it or not, there’s an ongoing debate between those who follow Hebrew Roots and those who follow Judaism over the significance of Rosh Hashanah. Judaism says the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei begins the civil new year, hence the name “Rosh Hashanah” or “Head of the Year.” Hebrew Roots says that’s just a rabbinic invention. Which is it? And how can this help us to understand why our Torah reading cycle begins around this time of the year?
